How to Grow Your Business and Life Using the BIG + Kaizen Approach

By: Jon Dwoskin

As a business coach, I work with people who are already successful—but stuck.

They’ve built something solid. They’ve hit milestones. But now? They’re in a plateau, spinning their wheels, or unsure of their next move.

Here’s what I tell them:

You don’t get unstuck by doing more. You get unstuck by thinking BIG—and acting small.

Let me explain.

BIG Thinking Starts with a BIG Goal

You want to grow your business? Expand your reach? Build a stronger brand? Make more money?

Great. That’s your BIG.

But most people stop there. They dream about the big goal. They obsess over the mountaintop. They buy the books, go to the conferences, take the notes.

But they forget the secret sauce: the daily small steps.

Enter: Kaizen – Continuous Improvement

Kaizen is a Japanese philosophy that means “change for better.” Think of it like this:

  • Tiny improvements.
  • Every day.
  • Forever.

It’s not sexy. But it works.

When you combine BIG thinking with Kaizen execution? That’s when things explode.

Reverse Engineer Your BIG

Let’s say your BIG is: “I want to double my business in the next 12 months.”

Now let’s break that down. Reverse engineer it.

  1. What does “double” mean? Revenue? Clients? Reach?
  2. What monthly targets would get you there?
  3. What weekly actions move that needle?
  4. What daily behaviors support those actions?

Now we’re talking Kaizen.

Example: BIG Goal → Daily Action

BIG Goal: Speak on 12 stages this year.

Reverse Engineered:

  • Pitch 5 events per week.
  • Connect with 2 decision-makers a day on LinkedIn.
  • Practice your talk 15 minutes each morning.

BIG Outcome: You get booked. You build momentum. You stay sharp.

But more importantly—you stay unstuck.

Another Example: From Life

BIG Goal: Become more present and energized at home.

Reverse Engineered:

  • No phone after 7 PM.
  • 3-minute breathing exercise before walking in the door.
  • Weekly date night or one-on-one time with your kids.

Small, consistent actions change your state. Your presence. Your relationships.

The Stuck Trap

Most people stay stuck because they’re waiting for a breakthrough.

The truth? Breakthroughs are built.

Brick by brick. Step by step. Call by call. Workout by workout. Conversation by conversation.

This is How I Coach

My clients don’t just get strategy. They get structure.

We think BIG—then we break it down to:

  • What’s your 1% shift this week?
  • What’s the one conversation you need to have?
  • What’s the micro-action that builds momentum?

Because when you do the small things consistently, you earn the right to have BIG results.

Your Turn

What’s your BIG goal?

Now break it down.

What’s one small action you can take today that brings you closer?

Start there.

Success isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what matters—every day.

Let’s grow your business and your life. One powerful step at a time.

-Feeling stuck? I help successful people get clear, think BIG, and take action that builds momentum toward something even bigger.

Think BIG!
