A Global Crisis Presents Watershed Moments

By: Jon Dwoskin

Watershed moments – or places in time where culture, society and life in general undergo a seismic shift – occur throughout history. Sometimes these watershed moments have negative effects on society and the environment, while other times their impact is positive. What’s the difference between the two? Choices. In short, today’s choices will shape what tomorrow looks like.

Here’s a quote that will help everyone focus during these watershed moments that are redefining life:

“You are not defined by your circumstances or what has happened to you. You are however, defined by your reaction and choices to these moments.

During these moments, all of society must rise to the occasion. In the face of adversity, how a society reacts and deals with adversity, defines its future. Now more than ever, it’s time to innovate and create solutions that are appropriate in light of the world’s current watershed moment.

Everyone on the planet is in this together, and together they are experiencing similar circumstances as one collective unit. That includes friends, family and co-workers who have been infected, healthcare personnel working bravely on the frontlines and remote workers, busily “social-distancing,” in order to mitigate exposure to COVID-19. It can’t be stressed enough that “we are all in this together,” which includes the business community.

Nearly every business faces the same reality in light of the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19. As of April 2, 2020, CNN reported that 96% of Americans were ordered to stay home, amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, for the majority of Americans, their work continues—it just looks a little bit different right now.

Amid fear and concern over the volatile stock market, mass infections, and general economic uncertainty, the business community must be ready to innovate. While our previous level of consciousness and mindfulness brought us to a healthy and generally profitable point in our businesses, it’s not the same level of consciousness needed to move beyond the pandemic.
Creating a new path toward ingenuity that will take us beyond the crisis is necessary.
