Forecasting Is Chess, Not Checkers
By: Jon Dwoskin
Lately, I’ve been learning how to play chess. On a recent family vacation, I brought a chessboard with me. My kids, my brother-in-law, my niece, and my nephew all joined in. We learned together. And I quickly realized why the game is so powerful and fun.
In chess, you’re forced to think two or three moves ahead. You’re not just reacting to what’s happening right now you’re anticipating what’s coming and positioning yourself early.
That’s exactly how business works.
Too many leaders stay stuck in reaction mode. Putting out fires. Responding to noise. Making decisions under pressure. Forecasting is the intentional pause. It’s stepping back to really see what’s happening: shifting trends, emerging risks, available resources, and new opportunities.
The difference is clear. Netflix forecasted where behavior was heading and moved early. Blockbuster reacted—and vanished.
Forecasting isn’t about predicting perfectly. It’s about thinking ahead with clarity so you can make better decisions today and protect momentum tomorrow.
In chess and in business, the leaders who win study the board, think ahead, and move with purpose.
Your next move:
Block 30 uninterrupted minutes this week. Step back. Study your board. Then move forward with intention.
Think BIG!
