The Perfect Breath Is a Business Strategy
By: Jon Dwoskin
Ninety percent of us breathe wrong. Not occasionally. Every day, all day.
That’s the opening argument in James Nestor’s Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art, and it stopped me in my tracks.
Nestor spent years investigating why modern humans have lost the ability to do something every other species does instinctively.
His conclusion: mouth breathing, shallow breathing, and over-breathing are quietly driving anxiety, poor sleep, and burnout, the same problems I see wrecking founders and sales leaders every week.
The fix he lands on is almost absurdly simple.
Researchers call it the “perfect breath”: inhale for 5.5 seconds, exhale for 5.5 seconds. That works out to 5.5 breaths a minute, and about 5.5 liters of air.
Do that consistently, and your nervous system shifts from reactive to regulated.
Here’s why this matters for business. You cannot lead a team, close a deal, or make a clear decision from a disregulated nervous system.
Breath isn’t a wellness trend. It’s infrastructure.
Before your next hard conversation, try it. Five and a half seconds in. Five and a half seconds out. Ten times.
Then go lead.
THINK BIG.
