THINK Big 2-Minute Blog: 4 Tips for Being a Great Podcast Guest

By: Jon Dwoskin

Congratulations, you’ve been invited to guest on a podcast! This is a great opportunity to promote your brand, but remember — you’re also there to make a relevant and intelligent contribution to the conversation.

Here’s how:

  • Keep it real. Being prepared with notes and topic discussion points can be helpful, but avoid being overly scripted. And whatever you do, don’t read your responses.
  • Set the mood. To avoid stage fright, get comfortable with your host before you go live by reviewing your discussion points. When on-air guests get a little nervous, it’s common to hear a few too many “ums” or speak too quickly. Be mindful of your breathing to help you slow down. And remember, you’re just having a conversation with a colleague or friend. Let it flow naturally.
  • Ask questions. While it’s best to stick with the agreed topic of discussion, don’t be afraid to go off-script a little. Asking questions of your host can make the exchange feel less like an interrogation and more like a conversation.
  • Be a gracious guest. Going out of your way to be grateful for the opportunity to join the podcast can go a long way. Consider being flexible with your predetermined topics and look for ways to go with the flow. Your host probably has a routine, and your willingness to fit into that routine can make you the first choice as a returning guest.

Most of all, have fun with it! Being on a podcast presents a unique opportunity for you to leverage a new channel and engage a new-to-you audience. It can be a game-changer in your quest to promote your brand.
